The National Football League, better known as the NFL, is known to most people as the most popular professional sports association in the United States. The NFL was established back in the 1920′s when 10 professional football teams came together and formed the American Professional Football Association (APFA), later becoming known as the National Football Association. In America, professional football became so popular that other leagues began supporting their own franchises, with the most successful of these being the American Football League (AFL) which consolidated with the NFL in 1970. With that consolidation, the NFL expanded into two separate divisions: the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). From that point on, the two best teams, one champion from each conference, played in the championship game matchup known as the Super Bowl.
Superbowl I, which ended the 1966 season, was played on January 15, 1967 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Nearly 62,000 fans were on hand in the stadium to see Vince Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 35-10. Even more telling was the fact that millions more watched the Super Bowl game on TV; and thus a new football tradition was established from there on.
The first Super Bowl to be called by game number is Super Bowl III as the first two championship games were not distinguished by a number until after the third championship game. The trophy awarded to the Super Bowl winning team is known as the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named for the coach of the Green Bay Packers who were champions of the first two Super Bowls. The trophy is made entirely of sterling silver and features a regulation-size football displayed in the kicking position. The Vince Lombardi Trophy was first awarded to the Baltimore Colts at Super Bowl V on January 17, 1971.
The Super Bowl has grown each year in popularity and has become one of the biggest sporting events in the World. Super Bowl tickets are one of the most in demand tickets in all of sports and come with prices soaring into the thousands. The costs for commercial advertising in the game are astronomical and annually the game is one of the highest rated programs on network television.
